Autumn leaves are falling but thoughts are on summer 2016

I guess many people in England are planning Guy Fawkes celebrations this weekend. As I child, I remember enjoying firework displays in our back garden with neighbours and family and I can still recall the smell of the bonfire and the jacket potatoes roasting in their skins whilst making fun shapes with a hand held sparkler. Here in Mallorca we build huge bonfires in the middle of the streets during January in the villages of Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa and Sa Pobla to celebrate San Antonio. Over recent years this has become a popular event with visitors, maybe because its rather nice to have something to look forward to after the Christmas festivities have finished! Spectacular firework displays are often the final event of the village fiestas across the Island and are most certainly not to be missed. Its an amazing experience to see the resort beaches full of families at midnight and the buzz of anticipation as the show begins.

Colourful firework displays

There is definately a buzz of anticipation in Mallorca for a bumper summer in 2016 as families look for a safe and secure destination for their annual holidays.  I have noticed an increase in advance bookings so I really do suggest that its best not to delay in confirming your reservation to avoid any disappointment.

Stunning Formentor

Spain continues to be one of the most popular destinations for British travellers, in particular the beautiful Island of Mallorca. So far this year half a million British travellers have visited Mallorca and this figure is set to rise to approx. 2.2 million by the end of the year.  Travellers come for holidays, to visit family or friends who live here, to spend time in their second residence, for a wedding or for business purposes.  With over 300 sunny days a year and just a short easy flight away from almost every UK airport it is easy to understand the attraction.

Surely you do not want to miss out?

Due to a number of reasons this year hoteliers and property owners are finding that they have some empty weeks during high season.  This is great news for those people that due to family or work commitments cannot book 6-12 months in advance. It is also appreciated by the spanish families who tend to only book a month or two before their annual August holidays.

Should you be thinking about escaping to Mallorca for a week or two I thought it would be helpful to list a selection of quality properties that have availability during July and August.  Most of the properties are located in Puerto Pollensa in the north of the Island. I have shown weekly prices and often there is flexibility on arrival days.  Full descriptions and photos of the accomodation can be found on my webpage. http://www.parasolpropertyrentals.com

Away from the Coast

Enjoy the open countryside of the centre of the Island – Villa Patrizia

Many families automatically want to stay in villas in coastal resorts however it is worth remembering that as Mallorca is a small Island, wherever your villa is located, you are unlikely to have to drive too far to enjoy some of the stunning 300kms of coastline that Mallorca has to offer.

Some of the most beautiful villas which offer value for money can be found in the centre of the island where you can taste the real Mallorca and soak up the views of the open countryside and often the backdrop of the Tramuntana mountain range.

If you have never holidayed in a countryside villa with private pool before perhaps you do not appreciate that you may not even want to go to the beach very often as villas offer such fantastic peace and quiet and a great pool to cool off in.  Evening meals cooked by `Dad´on the barbecue, with a beer in his hand and a pool ready to dive into make villa holidays incredibly relaxing for the entire family and cars are often left parked in the driveway for days.

This year I am delighted to offer four very different villas which are located in the centre of the Island.

Casa Ana is quiet simply paradise in the middle of the picturesque village of Campanet, so popular with cyclists of all nationalities.  To reach this 3 bedroom property you walk down a narrow alleyway from the street and are left amazed at this immense garden with stunning pool and views. The house is a traditional Mallorcan property full of character, beamed ceilings, quaint  sloped ceilings, the occasional chicken roaming in the garden and beautiful furnishings.  A car would not be essential for this property which makes it an ideal choice if you do not want to drive.

Also located in picturesque Campanet is the very impressive, Villa Casa Clara which offers up to 7 bedrooms, a truly stunning kitchen,  bright comfortable lounge and covered terraces, stunning exterior pool and bar,  sun terraces along with first class fittings and fixtures. An exceptional attention to detail means that the most discerning clients will not be disappointed if they choose this property for their holiday or even wedding.  Additional services such as personal chefs, waiter, baby sitting, massage or daily full cleaning  are available on request

The Villa Casa Clara is a perfect property for winter and autum breaks too as it offers an indoor heated pool, suana, snooker table and even a sun bed!  Several very successful weddings have been held at the property which has extensive grounds with ornamental ponds, barbecue area and great views.

Indoor pool, sauna, sun bed make it perfect winter break.

An additional property for those wishing to soak up some luxury during their holiday is the amazing 4 en suite bedroom villa Finca Antonia located in the picturesque village of Selva, just 4kms outside of Inca, the third largest town on the Island and centre to the leather industry. I have mentioned this property in previous posts so shall not go into so much detail however it is ideal for the most discerning guests and is also a perfect venue for special family celebrations.  The villa can accomodate up to 12 people using an anexe and has daily maid service and breakfasts served with fresh produce from the grounds.

Finally, a delightful traditional spanish property which has only recently become available for summer rentals is Villa Patrizia which is located 3kms outside the village of Sencellas, 5mins from Inca.  This villa is sat in the middle of open countryside and is a real treat due to the quality furnishings but unique character which makes it a comfortable choice of venue.  It has 3 bedrooms, beamed ceilings, well equipped kitchen and a beautiful covered terrace,  overlooking the colourful garden, which is just perfect for those long leisurley outdoor meals with the family. The pool is sat to the side of the house and is surrounded by furnished sun terraces.  A car would be essential for this property.

Saturday again?

This post is more personal than professional as I have had a whirlwind week and thought it may be fun to share some snippets of it with you. It always makes me laugh when people from overseas comment on how lucky I am working in Mallorca.  I guess they breeze over the word work and concentrate on the fact that I am living on the beautiful Island of Mallorca, surrounded by amazing scenery, sunny skies and relaxed people on holiday having fun.

Since being self employed I found that `open all hours´has a new meaning. However many appointments I have during the day the 12th hour always finds me me sat at my desk, or I have to admint sometimes in bed, checking up on my emails which may contain urgent requests for availability in the hotels, apartments or villas in my portfolio. Thank goodness for smart phones which allow me to keep on top of the quick straightforward replies whilst on the go! The final email is usually answered somewhere around midnight!

My desk!

This week I have dedicated a lot of time to the long term residential rental market, which I shall write about next week. I have a couple of new properties, verbally agreed a couple of rental agreements, with contracts to be signed in the next week.  It is time consuming as once I have visited the property, taken lots of photos from all angles and discussed the rental terms with the owner I return to my desk, upload the details on varies webpages to get the maximum coverage for the property and wait.  Most of the communication with potential clients is by telephone so this week the phone has been securely attached to my ear, apointments are made and then cancelled at fairly short notice, leading to last minute reorgansiation of the diary. Its multi national also as this week alone I have shown properties to Spanish, Italian, African, Argentian and British potential clients.  Offers are made, conditions are agreed and hopefully contracts prepared and signed. Parasol Property Rentals provides a professional service to both the owners and the potential rentees.

Ground floor apartment with garden for annual rental.

One morning this week was spent with the Satelite engineers whilst they installed a new satelite dish for an apartment owned by a British family who since the Astra signal changed have been unable to receive their favourite programmes.  This apartment is looked after by  me in my property care arrangements. The owners and family members and friends visit several times a year and like to keep in touch with their favourite programmes during their stay.   I spent another few hours this  week following the arrows around Ikea,  whilst purchasing some essentials for another apartment which I also care for on behalf of the Spanish owners who live in Northern Spain.  Naturally along the way you always find something you like for yourself!

Summer is here, weekly clients arrive, clients leave, clients call for advice, cleaners are sent to prepare the property for the next clients, pools are cleaned, gardens are maintened and the sun fortunatley keeps shining!  An enquiry for a wheelchair friendly villa In Campanet for September sent me consulting with great contacts I have for a suitable property and I have just received details and been asked to market an amazing 5 bedroom cliff edge villa which is for sale/rent on one of the stunning Islands of Scicily in Italy! I guess I shall have to go and check it out first as I always like to know all the properties personally!

I manage to fit in my badminton nights and also a few hours dedicated to the dog shelter in Inca and suddenly its Saturday again.  Where did the week go and why did I not have time to write my blog? Have a great weekend everyone!

Traditional Mallorcan Fairs

parasol property rentals, Jan Dexter, Mallorca, fairs,

Local produce for sale

One of my favourite things about living in Mallorca is the interest in keeping many of the local traditions, one of which is the annual village fair. Almost every village or town on the Island has their annual fair and these are shared between spring and autumn months and are very important events in the calender of a village. Many date back several hundred years and it is a fantastic way to meet up with the extended family and neighbours whilst purchasing  or admiring local produce and livestock.

The largest fair on the Island is held in Inca and is called Dijou Bo. It is held on the third Thursday in November whilst almost all the other fairs across Mallorca are held on a Sunday. Preparations commence several days in advance whilst the animal pens, tables, beautiful displays, special parking areas are set up and roads closed off.  The towns or villages are giving a `spring clean´ so they look their best for all the visitors that they expect to receive and many of the local restaurants prepare a special `menu de feria´- a set menu using local produce.

Natural sponges on offer

In the larger towns a huge variety of local produce are on offer, basically you can admire or purchase anything from a brand new car, motorbike, racing bike, tractor, swimming pool, double glazing to a bag of olives, sweets, almonds, plants or flowers.

Parasol Property Rentals, Mallorca, Jan Dexter, Wine, Olives, Fairs, village, tradition

Local wines, cheese, olive oil, pates, always a popular choice.

The area of the fair which usually receives the most visitors, especially families with young children, is the display of livestock.  Here we see a variety of birds of prey, chickens, dogs, canaries, pigs with newly born piglets, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys and sometimes bulls or even an ostrich!  The squeels from the protective pigs as the new borns are picked up by the children can be heard across the town!

During the ferias you are promised the chance to sample a huge variety of local foods, olives, cheese, figs, almonds, olive oil, pastries, sobrasada, quely biscuits and your senses will be bombarded by the sounds of families having fun, music, people chatting excitedely and lots and lots of wonderful colours.

Lots of colour at the fairs

Some dates for the diary are the Pollensa Fair which is held the Second Sunday in November, Sineu Fair which is held on the first Sunday in May and the next `big one´is the Capdeperra Medieval Fair which is held over 3 days and has lots of fun and entertainment to enjoy along with the vast displays of produce.  It will be held over the 16th 17th and 18th May this year and I personally have already booked a hotel room in the village so I can enjoy it to the full! Maybe I will see you there.

Choosing the perfect holiday accomodation

parasol property rentals, Jan Dexter, travel, holidays,

Where do we want to go

I guess the `perfect´ property does not actually exist however we do, naturally, want to be sure that the property we choose for our `so precious holiday´ meets the varying needs of all the members of your party. Quiet a responsability, especially if your party includes extended members of your family or good friends!

With thousands of properties in Mallorca, or Majorca if you prefer, to choose from I would suggest that you prepare a list of your essential requirments, followed by a second `would be a bonus´ list. I love a client that tells me exactly what they want as I do not waste time offering properties that are of no interest, because, there is no lift for example.

Mallorca offers a selection of popular resorts, all with a unique atmosphere and location so the most important point to consider would be the location of your holiday. Even within your resort you want to have an idea whether you want sea front, centre of resort or slightly outside the main resort if you enjoy a stroll. Remember sea front apartments will always have the highest price and so if you are on a tight budget it may be better to look for a property a few streets back from the sea or the centre.

resort, Mallorca, beach, mountains

Family resort of Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca

Now, its time to consider the type of accomodation you think would be most suitable to everyone in your party. Hotels are ideal if you prefer to have your beds made daily, breakfast served, and a 24hour reception. The aparthotel gives a little more space than a hotel room and a basic kitchen. Maybe ideal if you have young children who could join a kiddies club or make friends around the pool. You may just get the chance to sit on a sunbed for 30mins without hearing those magic words `I am bored¨!

hotel, reception, holiday, Parasol Property Rentals, Jan Dexter, Puerto Pollensa

Hotels often offer 24hr reception

If you require more than one bedroom, a well equipped kitchen for home catering and good home comforts then maybe a private apartment is worth considering. They provide total flexibility allowing you to come and go as you wish. Do check the arrangements for key collection and what happens should you experience any maintenence issues. If members of your party want to do their own thing is a second key available? Naturally caution and care must be taken when booking on line with an individual who you do not know so beware of any suspicious offers that sound too good to be true… they often are.
That brings us to the villas with private pool. This is great for large families or groups of friends, just be sure you have enough bathrooms if sharing with friends! The villas offer privacy, total flexibility, relaxation and the bonus of not having to get up at 0700hrs to put your towels around the pool before anyone else! Basically, one huge shop on arrival to fill up the fridge and freezer and thats it! Most villas have a bar b que allowing `Dad´ to cook, with a cool beer in his hand, and a dip in the pool between turning the sausages, he may even offer to cook several nights during the week.

Parasol Property Rentals, Jan Dexter, swimming pool, private villa,

Villa holidays offer private pool, privacy, relaxation

Now you have chosen your location and type of property you just need to decide what else you need, is it air conditioning, swimming pool, nice views, a lift, car parking, dishwasher, central heating or maybe wifi connection? Finally your maximum weekly budget and then start looking.

Just for fun, here are a few favourite expressions and their true meaning
Countryside setting… expect sounds of cockerals, barking dogs, sheep bells
Rustic charm…… how rustic? Is there running water/electricity?
Busy bars and restaurants just a stones throw away ….. they know, as previous guests threw stones to the noisy revellers of these bars
Traditional, contemporary decor….. in need of refurbishment
Non stop fun and entertainment….. no chance of sleeping during this holiday!

At Parasol Property Rentals I provide a personalised service to help you find your `perfect property´ ensuring a successful holiday, so once you have prepared that list, save some time and  forward it to me to do the work for you.

Whats next in Pollensa, Mallorca?

Pollensa, Parasol Property Rentals, Jan Dexter, Wine Fair, Mallorca,

Pollensa Town, nestled at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains

I have just finished the last mouthful of the sweet Mallorcan Easter pastry, un rubiol, and already my taste buds are preparing themselves for the annual Pollensa Wine Fair.

Pollensa, wine, parasol property rentals, Jan Dexter, villa, private pool,

This year will be the 11th edition of this very popular event which is held in the Cloisters of Santa Domingo in Pollensa town, nestled at the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range and just 7kms inland from the popular tourist resort of Puerto Pollensa.  The town of Pollensa is surrounded by picturesque countryside , scattered with beautiful villas and their private pools which make an ideal base to enjoy your family holiday in Mallorca.

We have had to wait a little longer this year as in previous years the event has been held in April.  It`s a fantastic chance to sample many of the wonderful quality wines grown and produced in the Balearic Islands.  No less than 35 different cellars will be displaying their variety of red, white and rosé wines, and a few cavas too!  Its not only about the tasting,  you understand! Each cellar has one or two staff on hand to provide all the information about the variety of grapes used, the varying lengths of fermentation and the time spent ageing in the different type of barrel.

Sample many of the 35 cellars at the Pollensa wine fair

Previously years a useful little booklet has been provided listing all the participants details and allowing you to mark off the wines you taste and make some notes. I guess that is just in case you are a little confused at the end of event, which reminds me to suggest that you do not visit the event on an empty stomach!

Variety of Mallorcan wines

Mallorcan wines are of an extremely good quality and I recommend that you choose one from the wine list next time you are here on holiday; or why not pick one up in the supermarket and sip it on your own balcony at the end of a scorching  day on the beach.

If you are looking for suitable accomodation from where you can walk into the wine fair then why not take a look on my webpage at Casa Nelly, a pretty traditional 2 bedroom house,  full of character and sat alongide the famous Calvario steps.  This comfortable house offers the most spectcular scenery, privacy, peace and quiet and yet an easy walk into the town to enjoy the restaurants, weekly market and atmosphere that Pollensa offers.

The Wow Factor

villa, swimming pool, rental, luxury, weddings

Wow!

It would be easy to think that after living on this beautiful Island of Mallorca for such a long time it is hard for me to feel the `wow factor´ very often. Well, you would be mistaken.  I like nothing more than exploring, or more often than not returning,  to previously discovered corners of Mallorca, often known as the Isle of Calm.  I grab the opportunity  to appreciate the crystal clear waters of a tiny bay, a truly delicious paella, admiring the super yachts in a harbour, the almond blossom on the trees, walking along the ragged coastal paths and of course the invitation to add to my portfolio a particularly stunning property.

Just a week ago, I drove to the traditional countryside village of Selva, located close to Inca in the centre of Mallorca. A quiet rural village surrounded by winding country lanes which are so popular with the cyclists who visit Mallorca in the spring.   I met Gabriel, the owner who actually built Finca Villa Antonia himself, in the village and proceeded to follow him along a series of narrow lanes, bordered by fruit and olive trees until we arrived at the gates and long private driveway of Finca Antonia. This is where I experienced my first wow of the morning!

welcome, entrance hall

unique staircase

Antonia, his wife, greeted me enthusiastically at the entrance hall with its attractive staircase.  A glance around the beautifully furnished open plan lounge, hall and dining room whilst listening to Antonia explain that every morning she brought fresh roses, home baked bread and cake I knew that I was visiting a 5* villa offering the very best in customer care and attention.  Wow number 2!

This beautiful Mallorcan mansion has been built using natural wood, stone and marble creating a truly relaxed light and airy feel to the property as I walked from room to room and continued with my wows which are far too many to mention.

Three luxurious double bedrooms and one Master suite/Bridal Suite all of which offer stunning en suite bathroom, dressing room, mini bar, safe, flat screen Satelite TV, piped music throughout and private furnished balcony or terrace with wonderful views.  A further exterior en suite bedroom is available for a supplement, and this would be ideal for guests travelling with a nanny or au pair.

Image

The fully fitted kitchen is equipped with everything you could imagine and is perfect should you wish to hire your own private chef.

The exterior of the property produces more wows, with the vegetable garden, rose garden, fruit trees, lawns and of course the stunning swimming pool and furnished terrace.  From here, as you relax in the sun, you can appreciate the views up to the village which is a short walk away, even though you feel like you are wrapped in your own cocoon of luxury.

Image

This property is available for weekly rental or for private function hire, especially weddings, being able to cater for up to 100 people.

Come and experience the wow factor in Mallorca.

Hello there

Jan Dexter, Parasol Property Rentals, Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca. rental of villas, apartments, hotels ,

Cooling my feet in the Bay of Pollensa

This is a first blog so let me introduce myself.  I am Jan Dexter and I am posting from Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain.

I have been living in Mallorca since 1985 after coming to the Island for a holiday which changed my life for ever….. and no, it was not a man before you ask.

After many years working in tourism with the big companies, I was offered the position of Resort Manager for a small company called Travel Club of Upminster which offered a personal service  to their customers, many of whom had been travelling faithfully with them for many many years.  After 12 years they sadly went into liquidation and this is when I decided to set up Parasol Property Rentals to continue to offer a friendly, professional and very personal service to people who want to travel to Mallorca and be treated as an individual not a number.  I am passionate about this beautiful Island and want to ensure that everyone who stays in one of my properties returns year after year.  Its great and rewarding when customers become friends and then introduce their friends to the delights of Mallorca and the services of Parasol Property Rentals.

Parasol Property Rentals offers a great selection of properties, which have all been inspected my me, to ensure they meet the appropriate standard.  Beautiful hotels, apartments or private villas are available for weekly rental and in addition I am available in resort should you need any personal assistance or advice.

In addition I offer residential long term rentals and property sales as well as a property care service to a small number of clients, ensuring I can provide that personal touch and care.

Spring has sprung and I am returning to my blog

Can it really be over 6 months since I wrote the last blog?  I recall my tutor highlighting the importance of regular blogs, every day, week, or month, whatever works for the individual  but `you must be regular in your posts` she told us.  Woops, I started off with such good intentions but then I guess busy family life and work took over. So lets try again…….

April in Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is a real `feel good´month as there is lots of positive energy around. Hotels, apartments and restaurants have openend up with fresh new looks and residents are eager to return to work and get a routine back into their lives. The first visitors have arrived daring to wear flip flops when the locals are still in boots, the nights are longer, the sun is shining, the fields are full of colourful wild flowers, bright colours re-appear in our clothing, cyclists gather in every corner of our beautiful Island as we look forward to the start of another summer season.

mallorca, cyclists, excusion,

Cyclists love spring in Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca was recently voted the best place in the world to live and this has sparked the interest of those people who have never visited the Island (yes, there are still some) to come and discover what they have been missing all these years.  The Island has often been called the Island of contrasts referring to the stunning changes of landscapes and atmospheres to be enjoyed across the Island.

Many visitors love to stay in hotels, apartments or villas in the resorts of Pollensa and Alcudia which are just so perfect for couples and families alike, with safe pedestrian promenades, great restaurants and of course sandy beaches with sparkling waters to provide the perfect place to relax and enjoy a holiday.  This winter I have been busy over seeing the full reformation of one bedroom sea front apartments Paloma and Patricia which offer the most spectacular views of the Bay of Pollensa.  The owners of the 3 bedroom sea front Apartments and Duplex Pedro in Playa de Muro have also been refurbishing some of their apartments. Every year owners make changes to ensure their visitors are comfortable and wish to return again.

Apartment, puerto pollensa, sea view, reformed.

Sea front one bedroom Apartment Patricia or Paloma with stunning sea views.

Two beautiful properties which the owners have reformed to a high standard and for the first time are offering them for weekly rental are the sea front 4 bedroom Apartment Barcares, Alcudia and the 4 bedroom Villa Xisca Pollensa with private pool.  Both offer wonderful views of the Bay, perfect as you relax on the terraces with a chilled glass of cava! Salud!

An increasing number of families now choose to holiday inland to enjoy the traditional Mallorcan villages and countryside, with the knowledge that a day on the beach is only 15/20mins drive away.  Luxury Villa Casa Clara can sleep up to 14 people and is perfect for family holidays or celebrations all year round.  Villa Felip is located just 5mins walk to Campanet village square with a selection of restuarants and bars and can sleep up to 6 persons however during spring and late autumn special prices are available for just 2 persons using the ground floor self contained unit with exclusive use of the pool and garden. A wonderful opportunity for a couple to enjoy all the space of a larger property without paying a supplement.  The pretty village of Sencelles with a couple of excellent restaurants I can offer Villa Patrizia with extensive gardens, pool and views.

Sunrise from Formentor

Here on the beautiful Island of Mallorca our official summer season runs through until the 31st october, after which a huge number of businesses close for the winter season.

September and October are the months that the real lovers of the Island visit and grab the opportunity to explore the wonderful hidden coves, coastal paths, winding roads along the Tramuntana Mountain range and traditional inland villages either by foot, bike or hire car.  The restaurants prepare their terraces with more intimate tables for two than noisy large tables for 10 and the standard of the cuisine and service rises to meet the expectations of the visitors.

Many of the spectacular large villas with pools sadly sit empty whilst there is great demand for one bedroom apartments and hotel rooms. Airlines reduce the price of the their flights and currently there is availability during October for return flights from London to Palma de Mallorca from 90 euros.

The island as always has many wonderful traditional events to enjoy during the autumn, including the Binissalem wine fair towards the end of September, the Alcudia annual fair during the first weekend of October and the Pollensa annual fair which is held over the second weekend of November.

Get Ready for the Next Blogging U. Challenge: Writing 101

This is fun, but I am struggling to write a blog a week at the moment! Considering the challenge though… what do you think bloggers?

The Daily Post

Feeling a bit bereft now that Blogging 101 and 201 have wound down, or just looking for a way to cultivate good writing habits? Never fear, Writing 101 is here!

(Well, it will be here, starting June 2.)

Our next Blogging U. challenge moves away from the technical and design aspects of blogging to focus on your content. Writing 101: Building a Blogging Habit is a write-every-day challenge designed to help you create a writing habit while publishing posts that mesh with your blog’s focus and push you a bit as a writer.

Here’s how it works:

  • We’ll post a new writing assignment just for Writing 101 each weekday in June here on The Daily Post. Assignments will publish at 10:00AM EST (14:00PM GMT).
  • There are no weekend assignments — you’re free to expand on a weekday post, write something unrelated, or (gasp!) spend some time away from your blog.
  • Each assignment includes…
